Our 25th Anniversary is on the Way! May 2022 – May 2023 In the year of our Lord, 1997, on the 15th day of May, Bishop Pierre DuMaine, the first Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose, communicated to Fr. John Sandersfeld a decree canonically erecting the Mission of St. Francis of Assisi to the status of a Parish.
Anniversaries are a big deal—a time to celebrate and remember. We look back to learn, to gain endurance and encouragement so that we can look forward with unity and hope. Throughout Scripture, God reminds his people to tell all generations of their LORD'S wonderful works. Part of what that means for us as Church is that we must preserve the memory of how God has worked in our lives. A Parish that has a strong sense of its history will have a better sense of identity to build on for the future.
Parish leaders gathered in our early days to discern the mission of this new parish dedicated to the Poverello, “the poor little man” from Assisi. “St. Francis of Assisi is a Catholic community of diverse people who gather to proclaim and live the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. We are a prayerful, inclusive, and explicitly hospitable people who follow the example of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, continuously reaching out to serve others and to build up the Kingdom of God.”
After consulting with the parish staff, I have established a planning team who will work together in preparing this year of Jubilee. Joining, Fr. Matt, Lisa Nakamura, and Leslie Legacion are Vince Sunseri, Bob Dolci, Jim Castle, Barbara Gould, Nancy Schwalen, Kathy and Larry Lohmann, Ederlyn Suriaga, Deacon Joe Cabrido, Deacon Willy Agbayani, Steve Volm and Ellie Ferreras. The mission of the 25th anniversary planning time will be to launch a year filled with special events and new opportunities for us as a parish to grow as a community, reengage as a people of faith, and come out of this pandemic more vibrant than ever.
