All children preparing for First Eucharist must already be baptized as a Roman Catholic, must be at least 7 years old and in the 2nd grade at the time they are scheduled to receive their First Eucharist, and must currently be enrolled in their second consecutive year (or more) of formal catechesis in a parish. The children must also participate in St. Francis of Assisi’s weekly Sunday liturgy with their family.
This is a two year process with no breaks between the two years.
The first year of preparation involves children attending JOY
In the 2nd year of preparation, the child must attend the Sacramental preparationSunday workshops for First Eucharist. The First Eucharist preparation workshops involve 8 Sunday sessions while the parents are worshipping in Mass.
JOY is our Religious Educational Process. All Sacramental preparation comes through the JOY Program. If you have children ages 7 and up they are eligible to join in our catechetical process. If you have a child 7 years old or older, the family must be in JOY to prepare for First Eucharist and High School Confirmation. Registration is in July-August 31 each year. St. Francis of Assisi and the Diocese of San Jose understand that all Catholics have the right to participate in the sacraments. If you have a loved one (no matter what their age or disability is) who needs to prepare for any of the sacraments, please contact our Faith Formation team at 408.223.1770 x316 or lisa.nakamura@dsj.org.
