Creating a Culture of Vocations
On the occasion of Bishop Oscar Cantu’s Mass of Thanksgiving on the 25th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, he proposed several initiatives as we move forward as a diocesan family. Among those initiatives was an effort the Bishop called, “Creating a Culture of
Vocations.”
Bishop Cantú suggests that this project begins with us, and especially with our families. Each parish and school was presented with a Crucifix made specifically for this program. By encouraging our families to pray together and dialogue about our faith, our hope is that younger generations will open their hearts and minds to God’s plan for them and for the Church.
The crucifix is to be passed on from family to family in our parish on a weekly basis. It will be presented to a new family at the end of the Sunday Mass they attend. This will provide an opportunity to keep the topic of vocations front and center.
Every family has the option to choose the prayer that fits them best; it could be a rosary, the Gospel of the day, a novena, etc. Most importantly to dedicate time for a dialog. For more information about the initiative, and to watch a video from the Bishop in English, Spanish or Vietnamese, visit

We will begin this new tradition on the first Sunday of July and continue, we pray, for years to come. If you wish to join in this valuable effort of “Creating a Culture of Vocations” and schedule your week of prayer with our Vocation Crucifix, please contact Gillian Griffis either by phone (408) 223-1562 or email (ggriffis@dsj.org).
