When you think of Mental Health, what comes to mind?
The World Health Organization has the following definition: Mental health can be conceptualized as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” In simpler terms, some people define it as the absence of mental health problems or mental illnesses.
Studies show that 1 out of every 4 adults in America is affected by mental illness at some point in their lifetime. That means probably someone you know is living with mental illness! The first place many people go for help is to the church (or the priests). Yet, the faith communities, for lack of resources, have struggled to minister effectively to people with mental health conditions and their families.
In this light, our parish is one of the pioneers in addressing this subject matter! We have implemented 3GEN+ Mental Health Ministry to serve the 3 GENerations: youth, parents, and elders (and everyone in between). Recently, we had our first Mental Health First Aid training that attracted 30+ enthusiastic participants. Led by the benevolent Deacon Ed Shoener from Scranton, Pennsylvania, our attendees were really engaged and inspired. We came away with beautiful shared experiences and mind-opening knowledge, such as the all-important Mental Health First Aid Action Plan: ALGEE.
